The perfect "Something to Read" this Christmas
30th Nov 2021
There’s nothing better than a new book at Christmas, whether your child is just getting into reading or they are an avid bookworm, choices of outdoor related reads are plentiful.
Here’s our choice of a few "something to read" ideas that both the team and our children love here at Little Trekkers HQ.
GOODNIGHT FOREST
Younger children will adore Goodnight Forest, this peek through board book takes them on a journey through different habitats as the animals of the forest settle down to bed. A perfect bedtime story, and a lovely introduction to the different homes animals live in.
TIDY
All about Pete the Badger - is a great story that also has an environmental message. It’s simple rhyming text is funny and the illustrations are lovely. This book makes for a great read-together story or once your little one is a more confident reader, they will be able to come back to it themselves time and time again.
WANGARI’S TREES OF PEACE
Wangari’s Trees of Peace is simply beautiful. It is all about Wangari Maathai’s passion and determination to inspire change, all by starting to plant trees in her native home of Kenya. It is a true story older children can really take on board and it will surely create lots of talking points.
THE BIG BOOK OF BUGS
A marvellous fact book, crammed full of amazing facts and really great drawings. If your little (or not so little) ones love creepy crawlies then this book is a must! It covers all the key groups of bugs and gives information in a really easy and fun way to read.
THE NATURE ADVENTURE BOOK
If your children are more practical and like to be busy, then The Nature Adventure Book is fabulous. It has over 40 different activities and games that will keep them busy and happy outdoors, including making twig rafts, bug hotels and dens to hide out in. A lovely extension to any Forest School experience they may have had at nursery or school.
LET’S GET GARDENING
Finally, for all the green fingered among you, the RHS Let’s Get Gardening book is a perfect gift. It gives really easy step-by-step instructions on how to grow your own vegetables and herbs, tips on attracting wildlife to your garden and has project ideas that focus on recycling and conservation.
We recommend you search your local bookstores or second hand websites such as World of Books and The Book Depository or independent stores such as Wordery or Bookshop.org.
