KEIRA FROM TOURING WITH THE KIDS TELLS US ALL ABOUT THEIR FAMILY’S ‘MOUNTAIN A MONTH” CHALLENGE FOR 2022 AND WHAT INSPIRED THEM TO DO IT!
We are very lucky to live less than 30 minutes away from the Lake District National park. Its simple beauty, with a magnificent mix of landscapes, from towering mountains to its lakes and tarns provides so much opportunity to explore the great outdoors. With this practically on our doorstep, how could we ignore the fantastic opportunity to explore further.
So at the beginning of the year, we made a commitment to walk a ‘Mountain a Month’ with the kids. We’re now 3 months in and have enjoyed some wonderful views as we have hiked up Steel Knotts, Sale Fell and Lingmoor Fell.
Steel Knotts was our first fell which we undertook in January. A pure treat with vast blue skies and snow covered fell tops made this hike particularly exciting. February saw us reaching the summit of Sale Fell in the Northern lakes in-between Keswick and Cockermouth. The views from the top looked over Bassenthwaite and onto the majestic Skiddaw.
Our ‘Mountain of the Month' for March was Lingmoor Fell in the Langdales, which proved to be the hardest Wainwright to date for our family. At a 4 mile round trip, it was quite the challenge especially as there are several false summits. We were within one hundred metres of the summit when we decided that the last push was just a little too much for the kids. Myself and the kids had a good rest while Richard continued to the summit before making our way back to our campervan.
You can follow our journey and get some inspiration for family friendly Wainwright walks by heading over to our YouTube channel, where we’ll be releasing vlogs for each Lake District Wainwright that we tick off. We’ll be cracking on with 3 more Wainwright walks up until June, but then we’ll have to call it a day (for now) as we will be leaving the UK for an epic year long adventure around Europe in our self-converted van. Hopefully we’ll still find some mountains to climb on our travels though.
