What is Scouting?
It’s more important than ever that young people get the chance to go outdoors to experience the freedom of our mountains and open spaces. The Scout association helps young people to feel a sense of themselves and find their place in the world through the great outdoors.
Put simply, the Scouts believe in preparing young people with skills for life. To develop their character, employability, and practical skills they need to succeed, encouraging them to do more, learn more and be more.
Each week, through the generosity of volunteers, the Scouts give over 460,000 young people the opportunity to enjoy fun and adventure while developing the skills they need to succeed, now and in the future.
Today’s global Scout membership tops over 55 million and there are over 640,000 Scouts and volunteers in UK alone.

Why camping is so important to Scouting
Camping has always been an important part of Scouting. It is both an enjoyable experience (in all weathers!) and a learning experience in one. For those in the Scout movement it allows them to bring a variety of things they have been taught into practice.
In addition, the campers are also learning other important 'life' skills such as hygiene, self-discipline, responsibility, and such like. There are a variety of things to learn to enable your time at camp to go smoothly, from being able to erect the tents to starting a fire are many things that scouts learn to do.
Nights away from home let young people build skills that set them up for the rest of their lives. Doing your own thing starts when you pack your own bag – and thinking on your feet starts when you get by without the things you’ve forgotten. Camping also helps everyone become a stronger team, as they work together to make sure everyone’s got a hot meal to fill their tummy and a comfy place to rest their head. Camping isn’t always easy, but the key is getting back up and trying again. At the end of the day, when you’ve put a tent up despite the wind and lit a fire despite the rain, you’ll go to bed with a warm glow inside, despite the cold.
