How to Stay Safe in the Water – A Little Trekkers Guide with 10 top tips

Posted by Little Trekkers on 11th Jun 2025

Whether it's splashing in streams, paddling in lakes, or dipping toes in the sea, water play is one of the best parts of outdoor adventures! But it’s important to stay safe while having fun.

Here are our top water safety tips to keep your Little Trekkers safe and smiling:

1. Always Supervise

Children should always be within arm’s reach when near or in the water — even if it’s shallow. One adult should always be designated as the “water watcher.”

    2. Check the Water First

    Before entering, check for:

    Strong currents or tides

    Hidden rocks or sharp objects

Depth — what looks shallow might be deeper than it seems!

    3. Dress for Adventure

A good set of waterproofs or a wetsuit helps keep kids warm. For deeper water activities, a well-fitting buoyancy aid or life jacket is essential.

    4. Watch the Temperature

Even in summer, lakes, rivers, and the sea can be cold. Cold water can shock the body, so ease in slowly and keep sessions short in chilly water.

    5. Pick Safe Spots

Stick to designated paddling or swimming areas. These are often monitored and free from hidden dangers. Avoid fast-flowing rivers or unknown wild swim spots without guidance.

    6. Set Boundaries

Mark out a safe “play zone” and make sure your Little Trekkers know not to go beyond it — especially in larger bodies of water or unfamiliar places.

    7. Be Careful with Wildlife

Teach kids to respect fish, frogs, or insects they might find near the water — and to never drink untreated water, even if it looks clean.

    8. Watch the Weather

Rain upstream can cause sudden water level rises even on sunny days. Check forecasts and avoid streams or rivers after heavy rain.

    9. Wash Up After

Have a towel and a change of clothes ready. It’s a good idea to rinse muddy hands and feet after play — especially in natural water.

    10. Make It a Team Effort

Turn water safety into a game or adventure — map-reading to find safe zones, “captain” duties to watch others, or races to put on life vests. Learning can be fun!
