Laura from Get The Kids Outdoors shares with us her essential kids outdoor clothing items for little adventurers!
Over the past few weeks in lockdown, I have been going through the kids wardrobes sorting out our adventure essentials.
After the restrictions last year were lifted, we were caught short as they had grown out much of their loved ‘camping clothes’.
Many gasp when their kids are head to toe in mud, but for us its just become the norm and packing a spare set of clothes in the car is just second nature.
You don’t need anything particular to enjoy the outdoors but if you are going to invest in some practical essentials for those little adventures here are our top 5 items to pack:
We mainly use these for winter walks but are great under pyjamas during spring and autumn camping trips. As we learnt the hard way when we first started camping, don’t let a sunny Easter fool you. The temperature can drop at night, but an extra layer will keep your little ones toasty throughout those chilly evenings. I have just recently brought some Manbi base layers from Little Trekkers for Connor as he uses these most weekends when fishing.
Love them or hate them, it is so important to keep those little feet protected.
Unless we are going for a muddy splash about around the local country park we steer well away from wellies. We were recently gifted a pair of Cotswold Ducklington hiking boots from Little Trekkers and they have been fabulous over the winter. Unlike some previous walking boots I have brought the kids in the past they are durable, lightweight and my little one said that these are ‘so comfy mummy’. My little ones use walking boots through the year even in summer, there are some marvellous walks for the kids and supporting their little feet is priority.
Rainy days, muddy puddles and even building snowmen these are brilliant. We tend to wear the same trousers when out and about, as I found out of all the outdoor clothing trousers are something we seem to get wrecked or stained. My favourite type of waterproof trousers for my little ones are the dungaree style. When we arrive at our destination, we quickly pull them over the kids walking gear and this added protection normally save us from having to change when getting back to the car.
It is all fun and games jumping in puddles and rolling down muddy banks but once the clothes are wet, they'll start to get cold shortly after and this added shell prevents this.
I think my little ones have more fleeces than pairs of socks, however tend to wear the same ones over and over again, Connor’s favourite is his camouflage Regatta Fleece and Cienna’s, her Dare2B fluorescent pink fleece. Not only do they give an extra layer of warmth, the reason we steer towards fleeces rather than a regular jumper is because they are light weight, roll into the smallest of spaces and they are quick drying.
It’s a must, even if it is rolled up in your backpack, a quality waterproof coat is essential for little adventurers. When we go camping or away in the caravan, we try to take a spare as in the past we have not manged to get them dry overnight and they are still wet and damp the next day.
We were recently gifted a Spotty Otter Forest Ranger PU Jacket from Little Trekkers and is honestly the most practical waterproof coat I have come across. It is fitted generously giving plenty of space to layer up underneath. Gone are the days whereby every coat went in the wash on a Sunday afternoon, as the ranger jacket is low maintenance and wipes clean with a cloth. Our Spotty Otter coat has battled all the elements of winter it is still like new and stain free.
