Celebrate Butterfly Education and Awareness Day with Little Trekkers!

Posted by Little Trekkers on 22nd May 2025

Butterfly Education and Awareness Day (BEAD) is celebrated on the first Saturday of June and in 2025, that's Saturday, June 7th. It's the perfect time to slow down, step outside, and appreciate these beautiful, fluttering friends of nature!

At Little Trekkers, we love any excuse to get outdoors and spotting butterflies is one of the simplest (and most magical!) ways to connect little ones with the natural world.

Why Butterflies Matter

Butterflies aren’t just pretty to look at, they play an important role in our ecosystems. They help pollinate flowers and act as indicators of a healthy environment. Sadly, many butterfly species in the UK are under threat due to habitat loss and climate change.

BEAD is all about raising awareness, learning about these fascinating creatures, and doing our bit to help protect them.

5 Simple Ways to Get Involved with Your Little Trekkers

Go on a Butterfly Hunt
Pop on your wellies and head out to a local park, garden, or nature trail. Look for butterflies fluttering around wildflowers and sunny spots. Bring a notebook or camera and try to spot different species!

Read a Butterfly Book
Cuddle up and read a book all about butterflies. A few great choices:

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
  • Backyard Bugs by Jill McDonald
  • Butterfly Butterfly by Petr Horáček

Plant a Butterfly Garden
Even a few pots on a windowsill can help! Try planting nectar-rich flowers like lavender, buddleia (butterfly bush), and marigolds. Butterflies (and bees) will thank you!

Make Butterfly Crafts
Get creative with paper, paints, or recycled materials. Try making a butterfly feeder using a sponge and sugar water, or craft butterfly wings to wear on your next walk!

Join the Big Butterfly Count (coming in July!)
Mark your calendar for the Big Butterfly Count later this summer. It's a fun way to help scientists track butterfly numbers, and it’s super easy for kids to get involved. Keep an eye on our social media for more info!

This BEAD, let’s help our little explorers fall in love with butterflies, and learn how to protect them for generations to come.
