We have not long come back from a brilliant week’s holiday down in Dumfries. In was brilliant for a number of reasons: the company (our old university friends), the glorious sunny weather and the amazing biking. Dumfries and Galloway is not well known for its excellent mountain biking for nothing, it’s home to 6 of the 7 stanes.

When we lived in Moray I would try to sign up for spaces on the free council-run Ranger activities every summer. Each year I was too late – they were so popular. This year in Aberdeenshire, however, I managed it! So earlier this summer the whole family went along to The Den at Auchenblae on a Saturday morning to be shown the Wonderful Water World of its burn by the brilliant Ranger, Helen.

Our first attempt at a walk was a rather short adventure where we took longer to get ready than we were out walking for. We had just started the climb up/ slide down the hill out of the car park when we were overtaken by a rather more prepared group with their ice axes and crampons.

I think everyone will have snow in the next few days but today we had a good foot of it, which is more than usual. We knew it was coming so the car was on the other side of the steep hill. Matt walked down the road for a lift to work and I was going to follow a bit later with the boys and get them to school.
