All week we’d been hearing horror stories about the impending “Beast from the East” and on the Wednesday we finally awoke to snow. We were all a little bit disappointed to be honest. Whilst it was lovely to have some snow it wasn’t quite the amount we’d been expecting. Don’t get me wrong we were just being greedy, there was plenty for sledging but nothing befitting the red alert we had. Well we shouldn’t have worried the Beast from the East had more it store for us -much more!

We live on the valley floor, at an altitude of 720m.The peaks that surround us are considerably higher (the Grand pic de Belledonne which looms large behind our house tops out at 2977m), meaning that often while we are having rain in the valley, snow is falling higher up.
Like most of the UK, we’ve had more snow than usual this winter, but, for us anyway, never really enough for a good sledging session in the absence of bitter, bitter winds. All four of us were therefore super-excited to celebrate the start of Spring with two snow days (during which I was up North on a school residential and the wind was the coldest I’ve ever experienced anywhere in the world, including Lapland!) followed by a calm Saturday with no plans that couldn’t be cancelled.
Ok – I’m going to be honest right from the start. I have ALWAYS wanted to go to Lapland to see Santa in his homeland. Imagine my excitement when I managed to persuade Ashley to let me blow my first post-career break paycheque on a trip of a lifetime.
Ever since the season turned and the snow started falling I had been excited to get Jasper out into the mountains. As part of my maternity leave I took Jasper on a month long mini ski season to the alps. As he is a little too young to get on some skis I couldn’t wait to take the dude on a mini slope side adventure sledging.
We decided to spend one last weekend in the snow, and set off to stay with friends in Lenzerheide. The real reason for the trip was to have dinner at our new favourite Winter restaurant (more on that in a separate post), but some snow play was also on the agenda.
