Taronga Zoo - Sydney

My final post on our Australia trip is about Taronga Zoo in Sydney. The zoo is actually located on the harbour, just a short ferry ride from Circular Quay. In fact the ferry ride itself is worth mentioning, as it takes you across the harbour, with excellent views of the Opera House with Sydney Harbour Bridge behind.

Our top tip would be to buy your tickets for the zoo before you go (I will explain further in a minute). You best ticket buying options are either online (they offer a reasonable discount, and tickets are valid for any day in a 12 month period), or at the ferry terminal itself (they offer various ‘combo’ passes for the zoo plus transport).

Once you arrive at the zoo, if you already have a purchased ticket, you ride up to the main entrance in a cable car offering yet more stunning views of both the harbour and the zoo. If you don’t have a ticket you have to ride up on the (rather less exciting) bus.

The zoo itself focuses heavily on Australian native species, which provides a great opportunity to see some unique wildlife without leaving the city. They have several shows and talks which run throughout the day, and the best of these tend to be the ones which focus on native species.

Our family favourite was the 'poisonous spiders’ talk, where we learnt a lot about spiders, as well as some interesting facts about dealing with spider phobias. Plus we had the chance to see some amazing spiders up close (very close!).

There is a huge children’s farm area, several great picnic spots, a selection of fairly area restaurants (we were pleased we took a picnic), a playground, and endless views of Sydney Harbour. You can find out more about Taronga Zoo on their website; http://taronga.org.au/taronga-zoo

About Me & Mine

I am Fiona, wife to Nigel and mum to Sofie (9) and Emily (7). We live in Switzerland and fill our days with craft, playing and exploring. We like mess, noise and being outside.

Favourite place in the world:

The mountains. The whole family love hiking and skiing, so the mountains offer year round entertainment. Plus we live in Switzerland so we have plenty of choice when it comes to exploring mountains!

Favourite things to do outdoors:

Ski, sled, swim, get muddy, camp, build fires, make noise, run around, collect stuff, hike, ride bikes, explore and be together as a family. If its outside then we will probably like it.

Wow that's a zoo with a view and that cable car ride sounds great. Sadly just a tad too far for us to pop in for a visit.

Awesome view of giraffes with the city backdrop - how special is that?! Not sure I'd be too impressed at the whole 'up close spider experience', but sounds very educational. (If terrifying for us arachnophobes!)
