A Special Guest
On a wet and miserable Saturday morning I noticed that the birds in the garden seemed to lift every leaf on the ground in their hunt for a bite. I felt sorry for them and came to think of how my grandmother always used to make homemade bird food all winter through.
By coincident I had some leftover shortening in the fridge, and after a quick search in the cupboards I found some raisins, coconut, almonds and oats, the perfect wild bird mix!
It took only 3 minutes to prepare, melt the shortening and mix in the rest. Pour into a bowl and set aside in the fridge to cool. Must be the quickest party to cook for in the world! After leaving overnight in the fridge, the mix is ready to serve. Simply cut around the edges of the bowl, turn upside down and set on the bird table.
All Tiarnan and I did for a bird table was to wedge a pieces of wood in the tree outside the kitchen window. Then we went inside waiting for our guests. And guess what, within an hour we had a special guest, a colorful woodpecker came to our table, I think it must have been a successful recipe!
