How to Make Pine Cone Decorations

A Christmas tree always needs some homemade decorations and pine cones have always been a favourite. Instead of going overboard with the glitter glue (although a little is OK), lets take a woodland theme instead.

What you will need for the Owl:

  • Pine cone
  • Feathers
  • Felt
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly eyes
  • Feathers
  • 2x Star anise
  • PVA Glue
  • Acrylic paint

What you will need for the Christmas tree:

  • Pine cones
  • PVA Glue
  • Pompoms
  • Glitter Glue
  • Acrylic paint

How you do it

  1. For the owl, using a colour of your choice paint the star anise and glue on the googly eyes when dry.
  2. star anise eyes
  3. Cut out an oval of felt about half the size of your pine cone to create the face of the owl.
  4. owl face
  5. Cut out two smaller ovals just a little smaller than the star anise and a pointy beak shape and glue on to the larger oval for the face then glue on the star anise googly eyes on top of this. Leave to dry
  6. finished owl face
  7. Decide if you want to paint your pine cone that will become the owl’s body, we left ours natural. Alternatively if you’re making a Christmas tree out of your pine cone, paint it your favourite shade of green and leave to dry.

  9. Create the owl's feet using a pipe cleaner and glue onto the bottom of your pine cone

  11. Glue the owl's face onto the pine cone (we used a small bulldog clip to hold this in place while it sets as it was a bit slippery!)
  12. Dip the sharp ends of the feathers into the glue and push in between the pine cone layers to create wings and voila you have your own little owl buddy to admire.
  13. For the Christmas tree, dab a splodge of PVA glue on random needles/leaves (what are they called??) of the pinecone and place a little pompom on. On the remaining needles/leaves (whatever!) splodge a little blob of glitter glue.

  15. Finally fasten a piece of thread or pretty ribbon around the top and you have a pretty Christmas tree, Christmas tree decoration!

Our Useful Tips

  • You could turn him into a Christmas tree decoration by fastening a piece of thread or pretty ribbon around the top of the pinecone before gluing the face on.
