Feeding Birds Their Favourite Cake
We need to do all we can to attract birds to our gardens. And of course just like us, birds are always going to be attracted by a good hearty meal and some liquid refreshment.
Making some bird cake with lard, nuts, seeds, cheese and other kitchen leftovers throughout the Winter and into Spring is a great way of giving birds the nutrients they need in addition to encouraging them to visit your garden on a regular basis. Put your bird cake out in the garden on a table or hang them in a plastic yogurt pot from a tree or fence. Try and make sure they are in a place where predators such as cats can’t pounce. I mention this from personal experience of watching my own moggie pouncing on a neighbour’s bird table on a regular basis as the birds appeared for their daily meal. The shame and embarrassment … we moved shortly afterwards!!!
Whenever you put any food out for the birds, put some water out as well. Give someone in the family the daily job of checking the water and topping it up as necessary. It is particularly important to check the water in very cold weather to make sure it hasn’t frozen over.
Even when the last of the Winter frosts have gone we can still provide food and water to ensure birds remain fit and strong throughout the year. Nuts are very nutritious, however during the Springtime it is advisable not to put them out as bird food as baby chicks may choke on them. Always buy your bird nuts or seeds from a reputable pet store or bird food dealer as peanuts may contain natural toxins that are harmful to birds.
